Congressman Vern Buchanan Endorses Jim Boyd

Bradenton, Florida — Congressman Vern Buchanan released the following statement today in support of Jim Boyd for Florida House District 68.

“I have known Jim Boyd as a businessman and community leader,” said Buchanan.  “Jobs and the economy are the most important issue right now.  Like me, Jim understands that small businesses create most of the jobs in Florida.  He will put people back to work by enacting policies to help recruit and retain Florida companies.  He will also help ensure those businesses have an educated workforce by adequately funding education.  He is also a fiscal conservative who knows how to balance a budget and will get the state spending under control.”

Galvano endorses Boyd as successor in Florida House

Jim Boyd with Rep. Bill Galvano

Jim Boyd with Rep. Bill Galvano

Bradenton, FL, September 10, 2009–State Rep. Bill Galvano announced tonight his endorsement of Republican candidate Jim Boyd to succeed him in the Florida House of Representatives.

At a reception for Boyd at the Bradenton Yacht Club hosted by 50 community leaders from around the area, Galvano, who will leave the Florida House in November 2010 due to term limits, expressed confidence in Boyd’s ability to continue the outstanding leadership he has provided the citizens of District 68 since his election in 2002.

“I know and respect Jim Boyd, and I am confident that through his leadership, the people of District 68 will continue to have a strong voice in Tallahassee,” Galvano said.

Boyd expressed appreciation for Galvano’s endorsement. “I am truly grateful for Bill’s friendship and belief in me. I’m the only declared candidate for District 68, so he didn’t have to take a position in supporting me. I am truly humbled. Filling his shoes will be no small task.”

Boyd went on saying, “I am gratified by the support that so many people from our community have shown me. The same dedication and work ethic that has enabled me to be a successful business owner will also make me a successful advocate for District 68 and Manatee County. Our next financial report will show that even in these hard economic times we have raised approximately $100,000.

“One of my first priorities is to get people back to work,” Boyd said. “I believe the State Legislature has an important role to play in recruiting businesses to locate in Florida and encourage existing businesses to stay here. Additionally, if we expect to have a workforce that can compete in the 21st century, we must adequately fund K-12 and higher education.”

Ken Burton, Jr. Endorses Jim Boyd

Bradenton, Florida 34206

To Whom It May Concern:

The departure of the Honorable Bill Galvano as District 68 House of Representatives member leaves some very large shoes to fill. Fortunately, we have someone who is ready to put on his own shoes and make his mark in Tallahassee.

Jim Boyd is a native Manatee County Floridian reared in Palmetto, a graduate of the Florida State University and a successful businessman. Along the way he has served as City Councilman and Mayor of Palmetto, and has been integrally involved in community organizations and endeavors.

This altruistic spirit comes naturally. His grandfather Hugh Boyd served in the House during the 1940’s and his Uncle Wilbur Boyd served in both the House and Senate during the 60’s and 70’s. Carrying on the family legacy of service, Jim will represent all who believe in family values, fiscal responsibility and accountability.

Working with three state agencies that comprise 90% of my Office’s responsibilities, I know first-hand some of the issues that await him in Tallahassee. Believe me when I say that I look forward to having an ally in the State Capital.

I have known Jim all my life and count him as a trusted friend. I assuredly, enthusiastically and whole heartedly endorse Jim Boyd for the House of Representatives District 68.

 Sincerely,

 (sig)

Ken Burton Jr.

Azinger just chipping in for a friend

Azinger hosts clinic in support of state House hopeful
By JOHN LEMBO – jlembo@bradenton.com -Bradenton Herald

BRADENTON — Keep it simple. Keep it fun.

Such were Paul Azinger’s goals Monday afternoon at Bradenton Country Club, where the Bradenton resident ran an informal 30-minute clinic prior to the start of a benefit tournament for Jim Boyd’s Florida House Dist. 68 campaign.

District 68 covers Manatee and Hillsborough counties. Boyd is running in 2010.

With approximately 40 golfers around him, Azinger talked about the golf swing, about how important it is to keep your body a minimum of 6 inches away from the ball to the right and 14 inches on the left.

Then he hit. Whether using a driver or wedge, Azinger’s tee shots stayed straight and flew out of sight, which came as a pleasant surprise to the golfer himself.

“I haven’t hit in about a month,” he said.

Azinger, however, was there to support Boyd, his friend for nearly 30 years.

“I would like to see him win,” Azinger said after posing for pictures with golfers near the first hole, “and represent our district.”

Azinger captained the U.S. team during the 2008 Ryder Cup and said he felt a strong sense of opportunity as well a measure of responsibility — a responsibility to the players, to the American public and most of all, himself.

So he shook up the selection process, learned the finer points of being a leader and helped the United States defeat the Europeans for the first time since 1999.

“You have a responsibility to yourself, and I know you can do it,” Azinger told Boyd, who was in attendance Monday. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

It was Boyd who asked Azinger for help with the tournament. And thanks to his famous friend’s cameo, Boyd said the field for the tournament was pretty full.

“He’s a great guy,” Boyd said. “Our kids grew up together at church.”

Decked out in a white collared shirt, cargo shorts and a pair of sunglasses, Azinger kept the clinic light and breezy. Golfers were free to answer questions whenever they wanted — they asked him about when he was playing again (“Soon,” he responded) as well as Charles Barkley’s swing.

“I try to make it simplistic, reasonably enjoyable and I try to educate,” said Azinger, who didn’t play in the tournament. “It wasn’t about gripping the club or anything like that — just the simple fundamentals. That’s what I was trying to get across.”

A member at Bradenton Country Club, Azinger knew the faces clustered around him.

“I love it,” he said. “I’m at ease.”

Mostly, however, he was there to support Boyd. And if Boyd is elected, Azinger hinted at maybe taking his spot when his friend’s term expires.

“Maybe,” he said with a laugh.

Golf Tournament

Jim was thrilled to welcome about 75 friends and supporters to the Bradenton Country Club for the Jim Boyd “Fore” House golf tournament on May 11. Scores were low and spirits were high as friends old and new came out to share a sunny day with the State House hopeful. Former U.S. Ryder Cup captain – and District 68 resident! – Paul Azinger opened the tournament with a rare skills clinic for participants. In all, Jim’s supporters raised about $15,000 for Jim’s efforts, a humbling indicator of their belief in Jim and enthusiasm for his candidacy.

We plan to hold this event again next year, and we hope to see you there!
