Greater Tampa Chamber backs Steube, Boyd

Monday, August 2, 2010

Florida House candidates Greg Steube and Jim Boyd won their respective straw polls taken during the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Political Hob Nob last week.

For the District 67 seat,  Steube received 47.4 percent of the vote, compared to 21.9 percent for the only Democrat  in the race, Z.J. Hafeez. Steube’s two rivals in the Aug. 24 Republican primary, Robert K. McCann and Jeremiah “JJ” Guccione, received 17.5 percent and 8 percent, respectively. John Studebaker, who is running with no party affiliation, received 5 percent.

In District 68, Boyd, a Republican, received 76.7 percent, and Dave “Watchdog” Miner, who is running with no party affiliation, received 23.3 percent.

The House races were the only two with particular interest to Manatee County included in the straw poll.

In the U.S. Senate race straw poll, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, a Republican, received 47.8 percent; Gov. Charlie Crist, running as an independent, received 33.2 percent; Democrat Kendrick Meek received 6.6 percent; and Democrat Jeff Greene received 4.4 percent.

And in the race for governor, Republican Bill McCollum received 39.7 percent, compared to 28.8 percent for Democrat Alex Sink, and 22.8 percent for Republican Rick Scott.

We Can Change Tallahassee for the Better!

Dear Friends,

Qualifying for State House Seat 68 ended last Friday and we now have opposition from someone who filed as a candidate with no party affiliation. That means we go straight to the general election on November 2nd. I’m proud to say, because of you and many other residents of Manatee County, my campaign qualified by voter petition.

We have the chance to change Tallahassee for the better, to make it more responsive to what is important to you. Over the next few weeks we will be working hard to engage as many voters as possible. I will be talking to voters about:

  • Creating incentives to bring new businesses to our area that will offer quality, high paying jobs.
  • Protecting our beaches, wildlife, jobs and economy from oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Guaranteeing parents that their children will receive a quality education from top notch teachers while assuring tax payers they are getting the best return possible for their tax dollars.

We are all tired of the mean-spirited rhetoric that has taken over our legislative process. I will work tirelessly to break through the paralyzing gridlock.

In order to make the changes we all want in Tallahassee I need your help and support. I need your contributions to get our message out to all the voters. Please volunteer in the effort to change what is happening in Tallahassee and make a contribution of $500, $250, $100 even $50 will help us win.

Thanks for your support and I’ll see you on the campaign trail.

Sincerely,

Signature
 Jim Boyd

Congressman Vern Buchanan Endorses Jim Boyd

Bradenton, Florida — Congressman Vern Buchanan released the following statement today in support of Jim Boyd for Florida House District 68.

“I have known Jim Boyd as a businessman and community leader,” said Buchanan.  “Jobs and the economy are the most important issue right now.  Like me, Jim understands that small businesses create most of the jobs in Florida.  He will put people back to work by enacting policies to help recruit and retain Florida companies.  He will also help ensure those businesses have an educated workforce by adequately funding education.  He is also a fiscal conservative who knows how to balance a budget and will get the state spending under control.”
